Sonamarg, located in the Himalayas, lacks a railway station and an airport. The nearest railway station is in Udhampur (250 km), and Jammu railway station is about 300 km away. Jammu railway station is well connected to the rest of India by rail. You can reach Sonamarg by taxi or bus from Jammu or Udhampur. The nearest airport is in Srinagar (70 km), and taxis or buses to Sonamarg are readily available. However, due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, Sonamarg is mostly inaccessible during the winter.
Srinagar International Airport is linked to several international airports in India. Sonamarg is 70 kilometres from the airport. Cabs are available from the airport to the Sonamarg hill station.
You can drive the 400-kilometer distance from Jammu to Sonamarg on your own. It will take approximately 12 hours to get there. Regular buses run from Jammu and Srinagar bus stations to Sonamarg, which is approximately 400 km and 80 km away, respectively.
Jammu Tawi Railway Station in Jammu is the nearest railway station to Sonamarg. You can take a bus or a cab the rest of the way to Sonamarg.
Buses are the most convenient way to get around town because they run frequently. However, if you want to explore the city at your own pace, you can take a tanga ride (horse carriage).
