Cabs are dropped off about 600 metres from the Gondola's starting point. Pony hawkers or sledge pullers may try to scare you away by claiming that the distance is 3 kilometres. They will quote an exorbitant price (around INR 1000) and claim it is the J&K government's official price. It is best to avoid the tourist trap and only hire a pony if absolutely necessary. Negotiable rates will cost you around INR 500. (to and fro).

A more local menu would include Qabargaah (fried rack of lamb; Kashmiri Muslims refer to this dish as "Tabakh maaz"), Modur Pulaav (sweet pulao, usually served as a dessert), and Muj Gaad (Fish with Raddish).
Raazma-Gogji (kidney beans with turnip), Sheer Chai (salted pink tea with almonds), Kehwah (sweet green tea with almonds and cardamom), and Sheekh Kabab (spicy ground lamb on skewers) are other dishes that almost define Gulmarg cuisine.
Summer, from March to June, is the best time to visit Gulmarg. The hill station is frequently visited because of the adventurous opportunities available to visitors as well as the scenic views of the surroundings from the town. If you enjoy nature and enjoy the heat, the months of April, May, and June are ideal for a visit. Gulmarg is also known as the 'flower meadow' due to the fields of blooming flowers that cover the city's lands in the summer.
